Teamsters Union announces contract ratification by aircraft mechanics and related workers at United Airlines.

The Teamsters Union, which represents aircraft mechanics and related workers at US carrier United Airlines Inc (NYSE: UAL), announced on Thursday that a contract, which provides for significant wage increases, maintenance of health care benefits and enhanced job security protections, has been overwhelmingly ratified by the Teamsters members.

According to the union, the Teamster contract covers approximately 5,500 aircraft mechanics and related employees in the US.

Teamsters added that the passage of the agreement is a major step toward achieving the union's ultimate goal of a single combined contract for the 9,000 Teamster mechanics at a merged United Airlines and Continental Airlines.
