QLD: Emaciated newborn whale washed up on beach

BRISBANE, Feb 27 AAP - A newborn pygmy sperm whale was today fighting for her life at the
Seaworld marine park on the Gold Coast after being found washed up yesterday on a beach in
northern New South Wales.

Seaworld veterinarian Wendy Blanshard said the female whale, discovered by fishermen just
south of Ballina, was no more than one week old and weighed only 16kg and was in very poor
condition.

The calf was taken to Mobbs Bay at Ballina, where it was stabilised before being taken to
the park's veterinary rehabilitation centre.
