Qld:Woman hurt when roof caves in after lightning strike

BRISBANE, Aug 18 AAP - An elderly woman was injured this morning after lightning struck
her Gold Coast home.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said the woman suffered head injuries and
was taken to Gold Coast hospital after part of the house's roof fell in.

An elderly man who was also in the house was taken to the same hospital complaining
of chest pains after the incident.

Thunder and lightning was widespread through south-east Queensland today, but weather
bureau forecaster Mike Bergin said the rain was not expected to last.

He said falls of between 12 and 14 millimetres had been recorded in many areas from
the eastern Darling Downs to the coast.

"It's still raining of course and I would expect falls of around 20 millimetres to
be recorded," Mr Bergin said.

He said the cloud band carrying the rain was expected to clear by mid-morning, bringing
a return of windy conditions.

"The rain isn't going to make up for the deficiencies, but it's very welcome," Mr Bergin said.
